The Manning issue is/was very serious. So is the issue of who owns this data, who can see it, when it will be released more widely if at all, and what happens to it in 20 years. There is no FOIA equivalent, for example. I do not trust the quality press implicitly. I trust it more than I trust the FBI, less than I trust the Sunlight Foundation.

If these documents are as important as touted then a very high standard around access and accountability is incurred and the press organs with Panama Papers access are in the role of gatekeeper and librarian. That’s not the normal role for the press. If the public interest aligns with selling news we are fine. If it doesn’t then we MAY be fine. Since some of this — the productized database leak analyzed by consortium — is newish cultural territory it is too soon to tell.
